Villa Jovis
Within the complex of Villa Jovis, you can see the small Church of Santa Maria del Soccorso. In front of the church is a statue of Madonna that is visible from the sea below.
Villa Jovis has some wonderful gardens and terraces that are worth a visit. Not only do they add to the beauty of Villa Jovis, but they also have extensive bathing areas.
Located at the end of the avenue leading to Villa Jovis, the 330m high Salto di Tiberios is a sheer cliff that is also known as Tiberius’ Leap. It is believed that Emperor Tiberius would hurl disobedient servants and undesired guests from the clifftop during his time at Villa Jovis.
Villa Jovis is spread across a massive 7000 square meters. At the villa, you can see Emperor Tiberius’ north-facing apartments, sections dedicated to official functions, the extensive bathing areas set in dense gardens and woodland, and the servant’s accommodations and lavatories.
To ensure that enough water was available to meet the water supply for the baths and gardens of Villa Jovis, its architects created a design that included a complex canal system to transport rainwater to four giant storage tanks; the ruins of this complex system can still be seen.
At Villa Jovis, you can see stunning views of the surrounding Gulf of Naples. Not only did these breathtaking views help Emperor Tiberius choose the location of Villa Jovis, but it also made the villa one of the best lookout spots along the Amalfi coast.
